St.Mary's church Poothamkutty is situated at north end of Ernakulam district and Angamaly Diocese and it is on the river bank of Chalakudy river. It is the divinity/spiritual centre for the people from hilly region who live at Poothamkutty, Palissery, Thabore, Edalakadu, Cutting, Olively, Chully, Munnoorppilly and Plantation. This church had celebrated its Silver Jubilee depending on the God Almighty in the year 2008.

Jacobite people started to live here only after 1940's, before, it was a jungle. Animals were wandering here and there. Some parishioners from St.Mary's Hermon church Azhakom, got some acres for cultivation. So they settled here as a group. Most of them were from azhakom, Mookkannoor area and some other migrants from other placess. After they became a group they prayed to the God for a church. Then the god answered to them and implemented his holy word "Those who request me, I never neglect them".

In 1973, with the leadership of St.George Sehion church Mookkannooor bought 60 cent (the place where the church constructed) from Mathew Daniyel paravettil and in 1976 Diocese Bishop Thomas mar Divannasious (Now malankara Yacob Burdhana, His Beatitude mor Thomas Beselious I) had laid stone for the chapel in the name of Eldho mar Beselious. Thus they started prayer fellowships. Because of the prayer feloships and hard working mentality, they put first stone for the church on 21st April 1980.

In 1983, this was blessed and the first Holy Qurbana was presented ordone by the Bishop of Angamaly Diocese, Thomas Mor Divannasiyous. After that Sunday holy mass continued by the leadership of formal priest Rev. Fr. Kocheril Gheevarghese(Father expired). In 1984 march on wards this chapel became a parish and got first vicar as Very. Rev. Fr. Varghese Puliyan Cor Episcoppa. When it became a parish it had only 42 families, but now it increased to 92.

St. Mary's Sunday school and Martha mariyam Vanitha samajam had started in 1984 and then St. Mary's youth association also formed. This parish has been celebrating its St.Mary's Ettunombu Perunnal and Convention since it became a parish in 1984(for 28 years). This is the only church celebrates St. Mary's Feast in Angamaly area.

There is special holy mass and internecessary prayer takes place on 1st Saturday of every month since 1986. Church celebrates "Vajanippu Perunnal" and there is one week uninterrupted prayer (Akhanda Prarthana) and retreat also conduct related to this festival. During lent days (50 days nombu) the church will be opened for pilgrims.

The construction of new church was started on 25th March 2003. Finished after 2 years and blessed by our Malankara Yacob Burdhana His Beatitude Thomas Baselious I in the esteemed presence of Joseph Mor Greegorious, Mathews Mor Ivaneous, Gheevarghese Mor Divannasious and changanassery Arch Bishop Mor Dr.Joseph Pavathil and on this momentous occassion our catholicos installed the Holy Girdle of St.mary in this church. Thus it became Mariyan pilgrim centre. Soonoro will be taken from the box only the eve of main festival once in a year ie., 7th September.

There is a Stone Cross has built infront of the church is in the name of Eldho Mar Besselious Bhava and this church firstly started a holy pilgrimage to Kothamangalam church in the year 1999. Our church has three chapel. First was constructed at Poothamkutty near the chrch in 1984 in the names of St.Paul's and St.Peter's, second was built at Moolepara (1km east of the church) in the name of Mor Greegorious in 1993 and third chapel was formed at Vellappara (1.5km north side of the church) in the name of St. George in 1998.

Church has 5 family prayer units, it has been depending God since 1990's. The completion of Ten years festival was inaugrated by Arch Bishop Dr. Abraham Kattumana, Ponthiphical deligate of Syro malabar church in 1993. Concluding ceremony was arranged on 26th December 1993 with the blessing of Arch Bishop Issahak Zakka Mor Sevarious (Representative of H.H Moran Mor Ignatious Zakka I Iwas Patriarch).

Since March 2022 Rev. Fr. Abraham Nedunthallil serves as Vicar of this church. Till this year Very Rev. Varghese Puliyan Cor Eppiscopa, Rev. Fr. Poulose Arakkaparambil, Rev. Fr. K.P John (expired), Rev. Fr. Varghese Thaiparambil, Very Rev. Alias Kaiprambatu Cor Eppiscopa (expired), Rev. Fr. Emil Alias Kooran, Rev. Fr. Siju Kaungumpilly, Rev. Fr. Alias Ipe Parackal, Rev. Fr. Varghese Arackal, Rev. Fr. Eldo Chackyattil, Rev. Fr. Eldho Cherian Kooran, Rev. Fr. Eldho Alukkal served as Vicars of this church. Priest ordination of Rev. Fr. K.T Yacob Kooran Thazhathuparambil and The first Holy Qurban of Rev. Fr. Paul Ayathukkudy was conducted in this church. The first Holy Mass of Rev. Fr. Eldho Palayil (The first Priest from this church) was also conducted in this church on June 7th 2008.
